This painting and its pendant Portrait of a Man with a Breastplate and Plumed Hat were painted by an artist in Rembrandt's immediate circle in Amsterdam. Until the 1920s the portraits were attributed to Rembrandt. Since then the names of Govert Flinck, Ferdinand Bol, and Jan Victors have been put forward as possible author of the pendants.
