The Coronation of the Virgin was commissioned by Pier Paolo Ugurgieri da Siena, provincial vicar of the Franciscan order for his chapel in the renovated church of the Observance in Siena. The altarpiece is framed by an elegant architectural structure decorated with palmettes and lotus flowers.
