This painting is the work of Isaack van Ruisdael, the father of Jacob van Ruisdael. There are beautiful dunes along the Dutch coast near to Haarlem. Instead of a vista over the sea, this picture shows the sandy vegetation further inland that is sheltered from the wind. The Haarlem landscape painters concentrated on evoking the atmospheres of light by using a tonal and restricted palette.
