RUISDAEL, Jacob Isaackszon van
(b. ca. 1628, Haarlem, d. 1682, Amsterdam)

Rocky Landscape with a Waterfall

1655-60
Oil on canvas, 109 x 135 cm
Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam

Ruisdael's style of landscape painting changed completely after his trip to Bentheim in Westphalia, Germany, in the summer of 1650. He abandoned the familiar surroundings of his native Haarlem as his main source of inspiration, and the dramatic approach which had already manifested itself in his early works between 1646 and 1651 now was given full expression.
