The striking thing about this view is the effect of extreme depth, achieved despite the very low horizon, primarily by means of the expanse of sky, articulated with cloud formations. The beauty of Ruisdael's home town and environs surely reflects the civic pride that arose in the wake of the liberation of Holland and Haarlem from the Spanish occupation.
