Grainfields

1665-68
Oil on canvas, 47 x 57 cm
Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

This is one of Van Ruisdael' views of grainfields which he painted in the 1660s and early 1670s. It depicts a rugged road through sandy, rolling landscape, with a field of corn or wheat to the right. A large windmill and a farmhouse rise above the trees on the left, and in the distance a large church is visible.
