Settling in Haarlem, Saenredam visited other parts of Holland, including Utrecht, making detailed sketches and drawings of buildings and town centres wherever he went. He used these drawings on paper to later elaborate his paintings on canvas in the studio. This painting is one of the two representing the St Mary's in Utrecht.
