In the eighteenth century there was a widespread interest in engraving in France. Nearly two hundred printmakers have been identified. A unique role was played by Gabriel Saint-Aubin, who was as brilliantly at ease in engraving as in drawing. He specialized in lively, witty scenes of Paris, such as Les Tuileries, and is perhaps the best guide to appreciating the sensibility of the period.
