SALVADOR CARMONA, Luis

St Francis of Assisi

-
Polychromed wood, height 86 cm
Private collection

Carmona carved several figures of St Francis, all of which are related to the present example. The saint is represented here with the traditional Franciscan habit, tied at the waist with the knots that symbolize his vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience.

Carmona was in many respects inspired by Pedro de Mena's work and this figure of St Francis is clearly derived from that sculptor's rendering of the same subject.
