Bust of Giovanni dalle Bande Nere

c. 1530
Marble
Museo Nazionale del Bargello, Florence

After executing in 1522 the medal of Giovanni dalle Bande Nere, leader of the Florentine troops and father of the future duke Cosimo I de' Medici, Francesco was commissioned to make a marble bust depicting Bande Nere, who died prematurely in 1526. The work, one of the most appreciated of Francesco's portraiture, stands out for the heroic and idealized interpretation of the figure, whose face is marked by the proud and austere gaze. There is some typological resemblance between the bust and Pontormo's painted portraits.
