SAVERY, Roelandt
(b. 1576, Kortrijk, d. 1639, Utrecht)

Alpine Landscape with Three Hunters

c. 1608
Oil on copper, 22 x 17 cm
Private collection

This dramatic mountainous landscape was executed during Savery's decade-long sojourn in Prague working at the court of Emperor Rudolf II. In 1606-07, Rudolf sent Savery on an expedition to the Tyrol to record the "curious marvels of nature." There he made drawings of mountains, fantastic rock formations, waterfalls and a variety of flora and fauna. The drawings from this adventure served as inspiration for his subsequent landscape paintings.
