SCHONGAUER, Martin
(b. ca. 1430, Colmar, d. 1491, Breisach)

Temptation of St Anthony

c. 1475
Engraving, 311 x 229 mm
Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

This early work is one of Schongauer's most capricious and dynamic Gothic compositions. Dürer was fascinated by this print, as was Michelangelo, who Vasari tells made a copy of it.
