Schongauer isolated the figures of the Annunciation on two separate sheets. The simple contours of the angel and the standing Madonna are relatively calm and unruffled. The setting has been eliminated except for a single groundline. The exquisite treatment of light and shade that flickers across their garments gives them a nearly sculptural appearance.
