In 1643 the guild of Jonge Voetboog started a competition between Thomas Willeboirts and Cornelis Schut to paint an altarpiece for their altar in the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk in Antwerp. The guild chose Schut's work.
Schut depicted the subject, the Beheading of St George, with remarkable foreshortening and in a flickering light. The heightened emotionalism he was able to produce with this deeply personal style also made Schut much in demand as an interpreter of the themes of the Counter-Reformation outside Antwerp.
