The colossal statue was erected in front of the classical Greek-style Hall of Fame on the Theresienhöhe. It was meant to equate her with the goddess of Athens, just as Munich was to be the new, resurrected Athens. Radical was Schwanthaler's break with the models of Antiquity: his Bavaria, who holds an oak wreath in her raised left hand and is clothed in a bearskin, looks, with the Bavarian lion by her, utterly Germanic. It was unveiled in 1850, two years after Schwanthaler's death as the new, Romantic, Germanic symbol of state.
