The altar by Thomas Schwanthaler in the church in St. Wolfgang am Abersee, Salzkammergut, was to become a substitute for the Pacher altar, since the Gothic altar was no longer a favourite in the Baroque period. Out of respect for the work of Pacher, Schwanthaler must have induced the abbot of Mondsee not to remove the old altar, but to determine a different place for the new altar. The altar is richly decorated with figures, 68 angels and angelic heads are present. The right half of the altar is used as sacramental altar in the centre with the figure of Wolfgang enthroned surrounded by angels. | |
