Semper designed his first opera house in Dresden in 1838-41. It burnt down in 1869 and was replaced by a second one. With its inner form shown on the exterior, it exercised lasting influence. The theater is also notable for the inclusion of a large foyer, beginning a development that would culminate in Garnier's Grand Opéra in Paris.

The Semper opera was bombed in 1945 but rebuilt between 1979 and 1985.
