STORCK, Abraham
(b. 1644, Amsterdam, d. 1708, Amsterdam)

Mediterranean Harbour Scene

-
Oil on canvas, 78 x 70 cm
Private collection

The genre of Mediterranean harbour views - practised first by Dutch painters in Rome (Jan Weenix, Jan Both, Jan Asselijn) - were popular in Holland during the 1640s when these artists returned. Abraham Storck probably never visited Italy, his harbour scenes are not accurate topographical views instead an attempt to capture the atmosphere and activities taking place within the ports in Italy. This painting is a characteristic example of Storck's interpretation of the genre.
