Portrait of the Cuspinian Family

The inscription on the reverse of the panel gives detailed information on the sitters, in addition to Strigel's signature and the date of the painting (October 1520). According to the inscription the painting portrays the Viennese humanist Dr. Johannes Cuspinianus at the age of 48, with his second wife Agnes, aged 41, and his sons by his first marriage, Sebastian Felix, aged fifteen, and Nikolaus Chrysostomus, aged twelve (they had eight children in all).

In 1502 Lucas Cranach the Elder painted pendant portraits of Cuspinianus and his first wife Anna.
