The work of Jacob van Strij, along with that of his brother Abraham, was firmly rooted in the traditions of Dutch seventeenth-century painting, particularly those artists associated with their native Dordrecht, most notably Aelbert Cuyp. Many of van Strij's work are closely related to Cuyp's, to the extent that attribution has often been confused, and in fact contemporary accounts suggest that van Strij actually produced some deceptive imitations.
