This portrait of Jacobus Arminius (1560-1609) shows the sitter half-length turned slightly to the right, but facing the viewer, wearing a fur-trimmed robe and a ruff. Arminius was a theologian from Leiden. The portrait is within an oval on which a motto is lettered: "Bona Conscientia Paradisus."
The portrait belongs to a series of thirty-four portraits by Swanenburg which illustrated the book "Athena Batava" by Joannes Meursius (Andries Clouck: Leiden 1625).
