TASSAERT, Jean-Pierre-Antoine
(b. 1727, Antwerpen, d. 1788, Berlin)

Self-Portrait

c. 1780
Marble, height 56,5 cm
Staatliche Kunstsammlungen, Dresden

Lifesize and full-faced, the sculptor is shown in middle age, with the dress and hairstyle in fashion around 1780. As a comparison with the portrait busts of Jean-Antoine Houdon will confirm, the work's closeness to the naturalism of French Rococo is evident not only in the handling of the hairstyles and ruffles, but also in the depiction of a wart to the right of the nose.
