Philips van de Werve and his wife Isabelle (née Charles) are portrayed seated with their children, attended by a groom with a horse. The Van de Werves were among the oldest of the Antwerp noble families. Several generations produced Burgemeesters (Mayors) of Antwerp.
The painting shows the strong influence of Van Dyck's group portraits from his late English period. The still-life and parrot are probably by Pieter Boel.
