This picture belongs to a series of four illustrations undertaken for the article "Summer in Paris" by Émile Michelet which was to appear in the magazine Paris illustré on 7 July 1888. The technique is reminiscent of lithograph colouring and shading, and the restricted range of colours is accounted for by the fact that the pictures were painted for black-and-white magazine reproduction.
The man in a black overcoat pushing a pram is Lautrec's close friend François Gauzi, who set for him several times.
