This picture belongs to a series of four illustrations undertaken for the article "Summer in Paris" by Émile Michelet which was to appear in the magazine Paris illustré on 7 July 1888. The technique is reminiscent of lithograph colouring and shading, and the restricted range of colours is accounted for by the fact that the pictures were painted for black-and-white magazine reproduction.
On the platform at the back of the omnibus, Lautrec's own silhouette is clearly recognisable, with his tall hat and chequered trousers.
