Landscape with a Shipwreck of Aeneas

1603
Oil on canvas, 200 x 100 cm
Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam

From 1597 onwards Frederik van Valckenborch was back in Germany from Italy, first in Frankfurt then in Nuremberg until his death. His pictures from this period, such as the Landscape with a Shipwreck of Aeneas, are mainly settings for dramatic biblical and mythological scenes in which he paints nature in an expressive and stylised way, and his works are characterized by an extreme tension which at times becomes almost threatening.
