Mountain Landscape with Ruined Castle

c. 1600
Pen, brown ink, greenish-brown and blue wash, 197 x 286 mm
Szépművészeti Múzeum, Budapest

During his lengthy trips at the end of the 1590s, Frederik van Valckenborch objective, topographically faithful landscapes and townscapes in his travel sketchbook. This travel sketchbook of over fifty sheets was later broken up and sold off sheet by sheet. The present drawing once formed part of this travel sketchbook.

Mountain Landscape with Ruined Castle is an almost romantic depiction with the architectural ruins in the foreground evocative of a past era and high mountains towering in the background. The drawing presumably depicts a detail of Salzkammergut.
