A Mameluk Leading His Horse

Carle Vernet had an exceptional ability to paint horses. His oeuvre consisted mostly of battle painting and hunting scenes. This painting depicts a Mameluk soldier, renowned for their ferocity and superb abilities as cavalrymen, leading his Arabian steed. A citadel can be seen in the background.
