An Italian Seaport (detail)

c. 1666
Oil on canvas
Staatliche Museen, Kassel

The staffage serves to underline the bright, idyllic atmosphere of the South appreciated by Dutch art-lovers and buyers. Jan Weenix, who had never been to Italy himself, probably produced this painting in 1666. It already contains some of the elements that would feature in the decorative, large-scale still lifes of game in which he later specialised, such as the dead hare, its fur rendered with unsurpassed subtlety and skill.
