The most successful Dutch painter of horses was prolific Philips Wouwerman of Haarlem. He rarely painted large pictures: his speciality was small-scale landscapes and genre scenes which included horses - battles, skirmishes, encampments, scenes at a smithy or in front of an inn, and hunts.
