St. Peter and St. Paul, Steinhausen

The pilgrimage and parish church of St. Peter and St. Paul at Steinhausen in Upper Swabia was built between 1728 and 1733 by Dominikus Zimmermann. Here Zimmermann successfully combined a hall built of free-standing piers with a central plan. Into the oval ground plan he introduced a further oval form, a "pier oval" which reinforces the impression of a homogeneous space, terminating in the ceiling vault. He emphasized the sense of height in the oval dome, which his brother, Johann Baptist Zimmermann, filled with an illusionist fresco, showing the world, depicted allegorically by the four ends of the earth and symbolically by Paradise.

The picture shows the interior with ceiling fresco by Johann Baptist Zimmermann.
