The Basilica of Santa Sabina has a original wooden door from the 5th century. Eighteen of its wooden panels survive - all but one depicting scenes from the Bible.
Though suffering and triumph co-existed in late fourth-century art, until now Christian art in Rome had never included violent scenes, even martyrdoms or Christ's passion. The first surviving image of the Crucifixion is the wooden panel, shown in the picture, on the doors of Santa Sabina.
