Cloister capital

1150-1200
Stone
Sainte-Trophime, Arles

One feature, peculiar to the cloister gallery in Arles, is that each of a pair of coupled columns has its own capital, and the pair is connected above it by the impost block in order to be able to support the weight of the arcade. As a result, the figures can take up the entire height of the capital.
