French art had a profound influence on the art of the Near East. Nazareth, where this late 12th-century capital comes from, was the most important centre for the diffusion of Romanesque art in the region. The two bearded heads decorating the capital are in the French tradition; the elongated faces, the eyes, and the hairstyles all recall those on a capital in the church at Plaimpied, in the Berry region. This is a very simple and easily readable type of capital, with figures set in a fan-shaped composition round a vertical axis.
