Early Romanesque style excelled in story-telling. Later sculpture, by contrast, increasingly made its central theme the human body, not nude as in classical art, but clothed. This entailed a concentration on drapery, beginning with the abstract incised lines, as in Toulouse.
This masterpiece preserved in the Musée des Augustins represents two women with legs crossed, with one foot shod and the other bare, carrying a lion and a ram respectively, came probably from the historiated portal of Saint-Sernin in Toulouse.
