Sts Peter and Paul

Musée des Augustins, Toulouse

Eight such reliefs representing the twelve apostles originally ornamented the portal of the chapterhouse of Saint Etienne in Toulouse. Like the figures in the Saint-Sernin choir, these two apostles shelter under an arcade; but in their attitudes very little remains of the Saint-Sernin apostles. Peter and Paul are attenuated, animated and sinewy; their crossed legs suggest a walking movement, and the statues seem to break away from the plane of the wall to assume a life of their own. The drapery falls in complex and rather agitated folds, the limbs, and especially the joints, hugged by arbitrarily patterned swirls of pleats.
