Juggler

This fragment of an archivolt comes from the portal of Saint-Pierre-le-Pucellier in Bourges. It is characteristic of Romanesque art towards the end of the 12th and the beginning of the 13th centuries. The juggler assumes a contorted position within a framework that encloses but does not imprison him. Whirling, dynamic forms, linear arabesques, and the fantasy natural to Romanesque invention here combine with a 13th-century sense of realistic observation, creating a work where accurate analysis of movement fuses with Romanesque fervour.
