This relief is on the tympanum of the south portal of the Baptistery in Parma and shows the legend of Barlaam. The main image depicts a man hiding in the branches of a tree with a fire-breathing dragon at its feet. It is an episode from an Indian romance in which a hermit, Barlaam, instructs a king's son, Joasaph or Josaphat, by telling him an allegorical tale.
