MEDIEVAL SCULPTOR, English
(active c. 1225-40)

Coronation of the Virgin

c. 1230
Stone
Cathedral, Wells

The first major monument of Gothic style is the façade of Wells Cathedral. Here, for the most part, the sculptural style is allied to the contemporary Amiens-Reims style. The quality of the sculpture on the façade of Wells varies considerably, the best being confined to the lower ranges. The Coronation of the Virgin is above the centre west portal.
