Labours of the Months (detail)

mid-13th century
Basilica di San Marco, Venice

The relief representing the Labours of the Months is on the main portal of St Mark's in Venice. The detail shows November (Bird-hunting) and December (Butcher killing a pig).

The influence of Antelami shows up strongly in the very richly decorated central portal of Saint Mark's. In the reliefs the fresh vitality of the Lombard school combines particularly with the idealised classicism of the Second Golden Age of Byzantine art and inaugurates an extremely refined taste.
