One of the ways in which medieval society changed over the centuries was the rise of a class of skilled artisans occupying a middle rank between the peasant farmer and the nobility. Increase in the size of towns led to increasing division of labour and increasing power for the craftsman.

The picture shows a relief on the façade of St Mark's in Venice. It depicts the use of a two-handed auger, adze, hammer and chisels.
