Head of the effigy of Philip IV the Fairordered in 1327
Abbey Church, Saint-Denis
This is a detail of the effigy of Philip IV the Fair (Philippe IV le Bel )who died in 1314. The monument was ordered in 1327.
This head with its long thin lips and broadly splayed nose has a definite character of its own and marks the beginnings of serious portraiture.
