MEDIEVAL SCULPTOR, English
(active in 1330s)

Tomb of Edward II

1330s
Purbeck marble and alabaster
Cathedral, Gloucester

This important monument departs from the general pattern of the period. Imitating a current French court fashion, the effigy is not of bronze or painted stone but white alabaster. The canopy, however, departs radically from all that we know about French or English court monuments in its tiers of elaborate arcading.
