Cathedral, Toledo

A desire to foster tradition can be observed in the iconographic program of the west portals of Toledo Cathedral. Framed by archivolts decorated with the coat of arms of Castile-León, the tympanum of the central doorway (shown in the picture) is devoted to the local saint, Ildefonso, shown receiving the chasuble from the Virgin, so that the Last Judgment is relegated to the right-hand side portal.
