This detail from folio 21 verso is a symbol of human kind. It stands opposite the beginning of the gospel to St Matthew. The figure resembles a doll without arms; the body is covered with a chequered pattern of inlay work. The head has no neck, and the hair, hanging straight back from the forehead to behind the ears, recalls the tonsure of Irish monks as seen in other artwork from the region. The feet are seen from a side angle.
