The Lindisfarne Gospels was made in the island abbey of Lindisfarne off the northeast coast of England. It has survived virtually intact, and contains 258 folios with four evangelist portraits, five carpet pages and numerous pages with decorative initials. The miniaturist was Eadfrith, bishop of Lindisfarne (died 721). The Latin text has been translated into Anglo-Saxon in additions written between the lines.
The picture shows the opening page of the text of St. John's Gospel. The script was written out by Eadfrith, and the tiny interlinear translation into Anglo-Saxon was added almost three centuries later by Aldred, provost of Chester-le-Street.
