The place of origin of this manuscript of 223 folios (also called Gospel Book of St. Wilibrord) is not certain, it comes perhaps from Ireland (Abbey of Rath Melsigi) or Northumbria (Monastery of Lindisfarne). The copyist was probably a calligrapher who worked in Durham and Echternach (now in Luxembourg). It received its name from the Abbey of Echternach, the previous owner of the codex. The Abbey was founded by St. Wilibrord (657-739) who was born in England, in Northumbria.
This Gospel Book was probably among those brought from England to Echternach Abbey by St. Wilibrord and his fellow missionaries.
The manuscript contains the four gospels with the symbolic images of the respective evangelists. The picture shows the opening text of St. Luke's Gospel.
