The pictorial world of this manuscript exhibits numerous divergences and additions when compared with the text of the Bible later taken as canonical by the Church; and as a result the illustrations are not always easy to unravel, or to interpret definitely. In the present scene from folio 76 recto, Moses is reading from the tablets of the Law to the assembled Israelites, both men and festively robed women. He is standing behind an altar for burnt offerings, on which, however, a chalice and loaves have taken the place of a sacrificial animal. This is a symbolic allusion to the eucharist of the new covenant.
