Codex Amiatinusbefore 716
Manuscript (Ms. Amiatinus 1), 505 x 340 mm
Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana, Florence
This manuscript of 1.029 folios contains the Bible in Latin. It is a copy of a manuscript made in Calabria in the middle of the 6th century for the renowned Cassiodorus, minister to the Ostrogoth king, Theodoric. The copy originates from the Abbey of Jarrow-Monkwearmouth in Northumbria; it was probably illuminated by an Italian living there.
The Bible is illustrated by a two-page schematic representation of the temple in Jerusalem and 2 full-page miniatures. The picture shows folio 5r with the prophet and learned scribe Ezra writing in a codex.
