Gospels of Saint-Médard de Soissons

around 810
Manuscript (Ms. lat. 8850), 362 x 267 mm
Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris

The manuscript contains twelve canon tables (from folio 7r to folio 12v). These consist of richly ornate arcades with straight and spiral columns and stylish arches and capitals. Through the columns we see an architectural backdrop that is still largely informed by the spirit and laws of antiquity. In the lunettes of the arcades are the symbols of the evangelists, in scenes or groups.

The picture shows the canon table on folio 8r.
